Did you know that unexpressed emotions are one of the leading causes of burnout? In their recent book BURNOUT, Dr. Emily and Amelia Negoski give a voice to something I have long known and believed in my heart.... Feelings buried alive never die, AND, unexpressed emotions can lead to burnout and pain or dis-ease in the body.

Feelings are cycles that happen in your body. They are simply neurological events and cycles that take place in your nervous system. They are involuntary. Every Feeling has a beginning, a middle, and an end, so long as, we allow ourselves to fully feel it.

I love the example that Dr. Nagoski's uses. Thinking of feelings like tunnels. You're meant to go in, and you're meant to come out the other side. Any well expressed and fully articulated emotion is shortly lived.

In fact most emotion only lasts about 90 seconds if you allow yourself to fell it fully.

But when we block ourselves from feeling our feeling, we get stuck in the tunnel, and we never get back into the light. This is what contributes to 🔥 burnout🔥. In some circumstances it feels safer not to feel a feeling because of the environment or circumstance we're in, or the people we are with.

We're afraid of being embarrassed or made fun of, or we hold the outdated belief that expressing emotion is a sign of weakness. But the truth is, if we hold it all in, it has to go somewhere. Your body will park it in a organ, a muscle or a joint.

It will alter the state of your nervous, endocrine, immune or circulatory system. The biochemicals of the emotion, if not fully expressed, get lodged in your system somewhere and will find a way to surface at some point or try to get your attention through pain, or dis-ease. . ⭐

If you're struggling with burnout in your life, take an inventory of your last 3 months and look at all of the places where you may have held back your feelings or emotions. Is it time for a good old fashioned cry or maybe a pillow hitting session to move some anger energy? Whatever it is, allow yourself feel your feelings so that you can get through the tunnel and into the light. It will save you from burnout!
