Breakthrough Burnout: the Number One Mindset Shift to Make

It’s 6pm. 

You’re just put out the last client fire for the day, your motivation is in your boots and you feel like a cranky, short tempered version of yourself.

But wait, your day isn’t done yet. 

There’s still the commute.

A somewhat healthy version of dinner to make for 3 different kinds of eaters.

Your daughter and her best friend to pick up from dance and your mom to call, in long-term care. 

You wish you had the energy to feel present. 

To listen to your son without your eyes glazing over, while nodding along in agreement to…wait…what was he talking about? 

Honestly, you haven’t really been listening. 

What gives?

You used to love your work and feel energized from it. 

In truth, what you really want, is to secretly crawl under a blanket and take a nap in a galaxy far far away. 

And it’s no wonder you do. 


Burnout is at an all time high with 3 out of 4 women feeling burnt out, at least some, if not all of the time, with the signs and symptoms often going unnoticed and unsolved.

Perhaps you’ve chalked it up to feeling a little bit tired or overwhelmed. 

Maybe you have a sensation of feeling a little more stressed or anxious than normal, possibly even feeling like you’re walking around in a cloud of brain fog. 

You might even be starting to doubt your competency & capacity to do the work you’re really good at, feeling like an imposter, or wanting to hide away from your colleagues and co-workers. 

Either way, this is normal right?

It’s just the way it is in 2023. 

It’s easy to believe that a week or two off will solve your burnout problem.

The truth is burnout can’t be healed overnight.

It happens over time, by making simple shifts in your life and business that help you complete the physiological stress cycle and restore your energy. 

The good news is, that while burnout may be common and even on the rise, it doesn’t have to be inevitable.

Given the right tools, mindset and coaching, it is possible to prevent and/or break through the cycle of burnout.

The first step is to shift your mindset. 

Body First. Business Second. 

This simple shift can change everything. 

Focusing on your Body First allows you to complete the physiological stress response in your body even if the stressors haven’t gone away. 

A stressor is something that is happening in your external environment

  • Lack of leadership or a boss that doesn’t respect you

  • Navigating your teen’s well-being as part of the “always on-line” generation

  • An aging parent

  • A difficult or challenging tenant, employee or colleague

Whereas, the stress response is something that is happening in your internal physiological environment

  • Your blood pressure is increasing

  • Your shoulders tightening

  • Your heart racing

  • Your breath shortening


These are internal reactions inside of your body in response to the external stressor. 

What’s vital to remember is,

YOU CAN COMPLETE YOUR BODY’S STRESS RESPONSE, EVEN IF THE STRESSOR HASN’T GONE AWAY. 

The reality is that the stressors in your life may not be going away anytime soon.

By focusing on your body first, business second, your business flows so much more smoothly and you feel like you have more capacity to handle whatever comes your way without feeling like a grouchy, irritable version of yourself who’s motivation is in your boots.

It can start as simple as, 

  1. Moving your body at a high intensity BEFORE opening your email in the morning. 

  2. Resetting your energy systems BEFORE walking into a high stakes meeting

  3. Shifting from short shallow breathing to taking 5 real diaphragm breaths BEFORE picking your daughter up from soccer.  

Looking for small simple ways to shift your day towards BODY FIRST BUSINESS SECOND adds up. 

It’s the kind of mindset shift that pays dividends.

Repeated over time, the cumulative effect will lead to compound interest for your body, business and relationships that you can bank on.
